Keyboard Switcher package readme, September 1990 version 1.8
------------------------------------------------
A KCHR resource allows you to customize your keyboard layout with
the help of ResEdit. These files will help you use KCHRs
effectively. You will need System release 6 or later.
For more information on using KCHR resources, watch for the
upcoming book on ResEdit by BMUG. The ResEdit manual from
Addison-Wesley and APDA also discusses editing KCHRs.
KCHRs and their corresponding SICN (small icon) resources can be
opened with Suitcase II or MasterJuggler or pasted into the
System file with ResEdit or ResCopy. Make sure that you do not
have more than one KCHR with the same ID number.
* "switch KCHR" FKEY: switch to the next KCHR in rotation. It
changes the active KCHR without changing the startup KCHR.
* "Keyboard Switcher" cdev (Control Panel device): Puts a small
icon representing the active KCHR anywhere in the menu bar.
Clicking on the SICN switches KCHRs, just like the FKEY.
Option-clicking drops a menu of KCHRs, so you can select one by
name. Command-clicking switches keyboard scripts, which is only
of interest to users with more than one script system installed,
e.g, Roman and Chinese. Keyboard Switcher can also set the
startup KCHR to be the same as the current KCHR. You can move
the keyboard icon anywhere on the menu bar. It is best to put it
either near the right end, or at the extreme left edge, so that
it will not overlap with other menus.
Apple's Keyboard cdev can be used to change the active KCHR. In
so doing it also sets the startup KCHR, unlike Keyboard Switcher.
Note to international users: When you switch KCHRs with Keyboard
Switcher, the keyboard script is automatically changed
accordingly. Some international systems have the ability to
switch keyboard scripts by clicking on an icon in the menu bar.
That's not the same as what Keyboard Switcher does, unless you
have exactly one KCHR per script.
"Electric Dvorak", a postcard-ware utility by Tom Phoenix,
contains a KCHR (and corresponding SICN) for the Dvorak keyboard.
You can use those resources just like the resources in "sample
KCHRs", independent of the rest of the Electric Dvorak package.
